Problem Introduction:
The Tigris Euphrates River Basin is located in the MIddle East. The two rivers originate in Turkey, flow south through Syria and Iraq, and empties into the Persian Gulf, the watershed covers roughly 765,000 kilometers squared. A major challenge within the Tigris Euphrates River Basin is the sustainable and equitable management of water resources among these three countries. Turkey does not permit enough water flow to Syria and Iraq, because of upstream infrastructure projects and water withdrawals, causing downstream water shortages. Water management has been a struggle to reach equitable resources to these countries and is exacerbated by the arid climate’s tendency for droughts. This wiki will report the history of the area, political struggle, climate, water usage, and social factors that all must be understood to tackle the water crisis that plagues this region, and possible solutions for this valued resource.
