VII. Goals and Objectives
Although the ICPDR has already established a list of goals to be accomplished by 2015, this consulting firm suggests the following as goals for the region to improve the quality of the river and address the current problem:
Short term goals:
- Foster improved corporation between EU and Non-EU member states
- Non EU member states are not obliged to follow the WFD.
- Begin to decrease the amount of bodies of water that are “possible at risk” or “at risk” for for not reaching environmental objectives.
Long Term Goals:
- To meet water quality standards set by the water framework directive (WFD)
- “The ICPDR’s basin wide vision for nutrient pollution is the balanced management of nutrient emissions via point and diffuse sources in the entire DRB that neither the waters of the DRB nor the Black Sea are threatened or impacted by eutrophication.”
The Danube River Basin Management Plan is updated every six years according to EU legislation. An expanded report on possible solutions to the Danube River’s problems is to follow in the coming months.
